The “Inner Need”…the need for spiritual expression by the artist, according to Kandinsky, has three guiding principles (these three may cause a corresponding vibration in the human soul): 1. color harmony 2.form harmony 3.the choice of object to represent. The inner need…something which is evident to me as an artist with my own work, remains elusive as far as clearly defining it, but I will try…it is that terrific desire to communicate with the viewer…it is the expression from the very soul, the spirit of the artist…it is a gift of great intimacy, the expression of it, that one shares with another. I am still not sure I have expressed it correctly…or enough! …is there a better way to define “inner need”? I don’t know… a couple of quotes from “Concerning the Spiritual in Art”… “…everything which adequately expresses the inner need is beautiful.” “There is no “must” in art, because art is free.”
